I recently returned from what I had hoped would be a restful vacation at Barbados' Tropical Views Hotel, but sadly, it was everything but delightful. I picked this hotel because of its beachside setting and positive recommendations, but a string of communication issues marred what could have been an amazing weekend. I think it's crucial to share my story so that other travelers are aware of what to anticipate.

My first issue started even before I arrived. A week before travelling, I emailed the hotel requesting an early check-in because my flight landed in the morning. To my surprise, I never received a reply. Not even an automated message. After several days with no response, I gave up. This lack of communication was frustrating and unprofessional, especially for a four-star hotel.
Unfortunately, the communication problems continued when I landed. I had been told during the booking process that an airport transfer was arranged for me, but when I arrived at the airport, there was nobody waiting. I searched for almost an hour, asked airport staff, and eventually had to pay for a taxi myself. When I later asked the hotel about it, they simply said there “must have been a misunderstanding.” This was a big inconvenience after a long flight.
I made an effort to unwind and take advantage of the hotel's amenities after I arrived, but I soon found that the information was erratic. The mobile app indicated supper was served until 10pm, but when I arrived at 9:30pm, the restaurant staff told me the kitchen had already closed. I didn't intend to spend my first evening eating appetizers from the bar.
My family was immediately impacted by another problem. My parents, who accompanied me on the trip, are not fluent in English. When they contacted staff for assistance, they were instructed to "use the app," which they were unable to utilize since they were having trouble understanding the room service system. No attempt was made to communicate with them in a clear and concise manner, and there was no multilingual assistance.
Another issue was maintenance communication. When we arrived, our shower was damaged, so we reported it right away. No one showed up for two days despite the receptionist's assurance that someone will "come shortly." Before maintenance eventually showed up, we had to remind them twice. We had needless agony during our visit as a result of this delay. Finally, the hotel did not adequately describe its amenities. The spa was practically buried, with no signs or appropriate directions, and we were not given any information about how to make tour reservations. Each employee responded differently when we asked them for assistance. It seems that the employees were not well briefed or instructed.

In the end, all six of these communication failures turned what should have been a relaxing holiday into a stressful experience. If the Tropical Views Hotel could improve its communication, it would significantly improve guest satisfaction. Clear, timely and accurate communication is essential, and I hope the hotel will make serious improvements in the future.
